SDI Drift Diver

Drift diving lets you cover a large area with very little effort by riding the current. The SDI Drift Diver Course teaches you how to plan, enter, stay together, and exit safely on drift dives.

Who this course is for:

Certified divers heading to destinations with current, like Cozumel, who want to drift with confidence.

Course prerequisites

• Minimum age 18, or 10 with parental consent
• SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent

What you can expect to learn:

The SDI Drift Diver Course takes an in-depth look at all of the following:

• Tides, currents, waves, and surge
• Drift equipment: floats, lines, reels, and compass
• Buddy organization and team planning
• Buoyancy control and safety stops in current
• Navigation and communication
• Entry and exit techniques

What’s in it for you?

Graduates may plan and conduct drift dives without direct instructor supervision, in conditions similar to their training. Junior divers (ages 10-14) must dive with a parent, guardian, or dive professional. Counts toward the SDI Advanced Diver Development Program.

SDI Drift Diver minimum certification requirements:

• Complete two open water dives to a maximum depth of 18 metres / 60 feet
• Dive one: observe the instructor demonstrate float, line, and reel use
• Dive two: perform those skills yourself
• Demonstrate mature judgment in dive planning and execution
