SDI Research Diver

Turn your dives into data. The SDI Research Diver Course introduces you to the methods divers use to survey, map, and record what they find underwater.

Who this course is for:

Certified divers interested in citizen science, surveys, and learning research techniques.

Course prerequisites

• Minimum age 18, or 15 with parental consent
• SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent

What you can expect to learn:

The SDI Research Diver Course takes an in-depth look at all of the following:

• Aquatic ecology, food chains, habitats, and oceanography
• Identifying fish, invertebrates, and other aquatic life
• Data collection, mapping, and survey techniques
• How research dives are planned and used
• Conservation practices

What’s in it for you?

Graduates may plan and conduct research dives without direct instructor supervision, in conditions similar to their training. Counts toward the SDI Advanced Diver Development Program.

SDI Research Diver minimum certification requirements:

• Demonstrate dive planning, equipment inspection, and compass navigation
• Perform a survey and record data underwater
• Identify local aquatic life
• Demonstrate mature judgment in dive planning and execution
